The Origin of Our Name

Naxxar Technology takes its name from a small town in the northern part of Malta. For centuries, this compact Mediterranean island served as a vital hub for regional and international trade, owing to its strategic location at the crossroads of maritime commerce. Malta provided seafarers, traders, and merchants with an essential connecting point, and its remarkable connectivity established it as a centre where trade and innovation converged to define the frontiers of their era.

This history reflects the founding ambition behind Naxxar Tech: to become a critical hub for innovation in global trade, with sustainability, visibility, and security at its core, helping to redefine the frontiers of the industry's future.

The Scale of the Opportunity in Global Trade

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) projects that global trade volumes will approximately double by 2050, a trajectory that creates substantial commercial opportunity alongside significant operational challenges. Cargo volumes carried across an entire year in 2022 are projected to move within a 90-day window by 2050. As a result, efficiency, productivity, and sustainability will become critical determinants of continued growth and competitiveness in global trade.

This shift is ushering in a new era of frictionless trade, in which cargo, information, and payments flow smoothly and promptly between all participants in the global supply chain. Realising this transition will require a new ecosystem of innovative hardware and software, purpose-built to support the next generation of global logistics infrastructure.

The convergence of digital transformation and emerging technologies has reached a tipping point, with growing focus on smart ships, smart ports, and smart supply chains. This evolving technological infrastructure is becoming increasingly dependent on the seamless capture and flow of data. Data itself is emerging as the lifeblood of global shipping, and is fast becoming one of the most valuable assets in international trade.

Naxxar Tech's founding premise is that the greater the number of connected data points, and the faster those data points can be linked, the greater the resulting value, the true 'X-factor' driving competitive advantage in modern logistics. The information age has arrived for global trade, and Naxxar Tech is committed to the belief that technological innovation will be the defining force behind a more efficient and prosperous era for the industry ahead.

The Evolution of Our Vision

Naxxar Tech's vision has been shaped through direct experience across three of the world's leading technology accelerators, each of which sharpened our understanding of the industry's most pressing challenges.

Visibility. Naxxar Tech's founding vision took shape during the Entrepreneur First accelerator in 2018. It was here that we identified cargo visibility, connectivity, and data access as significant and growing challenges for global trade. At the time, most participants in the container shipping sector had little to no real-time visibility of their shipments, a gap that remains widespread across the industry today.

Security. During the Lloyd's Lab accelerator in 2018, our research revealed the scale of cargo security risk facing the container shipping segment, with losses exceeding fifty billion US dollars annually, more than seventy percent of which involve full container loads. This insight shaped an early mission to automate claims handling with cargo security at its core. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted this initial venture, prompting a strategic pivot.

Sustainability. During the disruption of COVID-19, Naxxar Tech redirected its focus toward carbon emissions reporting, recognising the opportunity to bring structure and automation to a pressing global challenge. This pivot was informed by our participation in the Cambridge-based Carbon13 environmental sustainability accelerator, where guidance from experienced mentors brought the scale of the climate crisis into sharp focus. With global freight-related carbon emissions accounting for a meaningful share of total global emissions, we identified a natural synergy: the same tracking devices and data infrastructure used for visibility and security could also power robust, real-time sustainability reporting.

Through this evolution, Naxxar Tech's vision matured into its current form: empowering data-driven decision-making that simultaneously advances sustainability, visibility, and security across global trade.
