Intermodal Europe 2025: IoT and the New Age of Cargo Intelligence

October 30, 2025 at 12:00:00 PM

Intermodal Europe 2025 reinforced something we have believed at Naxxar Tech for some time: the container shipping industry is approaching a major technological tipping point.

Bringing together container shipping lines, equipment owners, lessors, technology providers and logistics professionals from across the world, the event provided an important opportunity to see how rapidly digitalisation is reshaping the container industry. For Naxxar Tech, one message stood out above all others: the mass adoption of IoT technology for standard dry containers is moving from ambition to reality. After more than 15 years of industry development, connected-container technology is no longer sitting on the periphery of global shipping. It is increasingly becoming part of the digital infrastructure underpinning the next generation of intelligent and increasingly autonomous supply chains.

The Mass Adoption of IoT for Dry Containers

Historically, much of the focus on container monitoring has centred on refrigerated containers, where monitoring temperature and other conditions is essential to protecting sensitive cargo.

That is changing. The industry is increasingly recognising the value of connecting the much larger global fleet of standard dry containers. IoT devices can transform an ordinary container into a source of real-time operational intelligence. Location, movement, environmental conditions and other events can be captured throughout the cargo journey and communicated to stakeholders across the supply chain. This creates opportunities extending far beyond simple container tracking. Connected containers can provide greater insight into cargo location, container utilisation, dwell time, idle periods, delays, route deviations and potentially unauthorised access or other abnormal events.

For cargo owners and logistics operators, the container is therefore evolving from a passive steel box into an intelligent and connected asset.

Operational Visibility Is No Longer Optional

Another major takeaway from Intermodal Europe was the growing expectation for real-time supply-chain visibility. Shippers, container owners, lessors and logistics providers presented compelling use cases demonstrating how IoT-generated data can improve everyday operational decision-making.

Traditional supply chains often depend on fragmented information from multiple parties. Updates may only become available when cargo reaches a particular checkpoint or when information is manually entered into another system.

IoT changes this model

Instead of asking “Where is my cargo?”, businesses can increasingly access information directly from the container itself. This greater visibility can help organisations identify potential disruptions earlier, understand dwell times, improve asset utilisation and provide customers with more accurate information about their shipments. At Naxxar Tech, we believe this transition from periodic shipment updates to continuous cargo intelligence will become one of the defining changes in global logistics.

Turning IoT Data into Cargo Intelligence

However, simply generating more data is not enough. The next stage of digitalisation will be about transforming the enormous amount of information generated by connected assets into meaningful operational intelligence. This is where technologies such as AI, machine learning, digital twins and predictive analytics become increasingly important. Combining IoT data with other supply-chain information can allow businesses to move beyond simply observing what has happened towards identifying patterns, detecting anomalies and potentially predicting what could happen next. For Naxxar Tech, this represents the emergence of a new age of cargo intelligence. Our vision is to bring together real-time IoT visibility, digital cargo and container inspections, and AI-driven carbon emissions monitoring to provide businesses with a more complete understanding of cargo throughout its journey.

Sustainability Becomes a Business Driver

Sustainability was another important theme emerging from discussions at Intermodal Europe. The relationship between digitalisation and decarbonisation is becoming increasingly clear. Better information about container movements, utilisation and supply-chain activity can help organisations identify operational inefficiencies. This could include unnecessary dwell time, inefficient routing, underutilised assets or empty repositioning movements. When IoT data is combined with analytics, organisations have a stronger foundation for making decisions that can simultaneously improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact. This is particularly important as cargo owners and logistics providers face increasing pressure to understand and report the carbon emissions associated with moving goods through complex multimodal supply chains. At Naxxar Tech, this aligns closely with our mission to enable smarter, greener and more transparent cargo operations.

Collaboration Will Determine the Pace of Transformation

Perhaps one of the most encouraging developments at Intermodal Europe was the growing level of collaboration across the container ecosystem. Shipping lines, container owners, technology companies, ports and logistics providers increasingly recognise that no single organisation can digitalise the global container supply chain alone. Interoperability will be critical. Connected containers need to operate across shipping lines, ports, terminals, road and rail networks and international borders. The value of the technology increases significantly when information can move securely between different organisations and digital platforms. Standards, common data frameworks and technology partnerships will therefore play an important role in enabling IoT adoption at scale.

Naxxar Tech is committed to being part of this emerging ecosystem and supporting open, interoperable and collaborative digital supply chains.

The Connected Container Becomes Part of a Bigger Digital Ecosystem

The significance of mass IoT adoption extends beyond the container itself. Connected containers can become another intelligent node within a much larger digital logistics ecosystem incorporating vessels, ports, terminals, warehouses, trucks, rail networks and customs systems. As these systems become increasingly connected, supply chains can potentially become more responsive and automated. A container arriving at a port could communicate its location and status. Digital systems could identify exceptions or delays. AI could analyse risk or operational data. Carbon emissions could be calculated throughout the journey. Relevant stakeholders could receive information without relying solely on manual reporting. This is the direction in which global logistics is moving.

The New Age of Cargo Intelligence

Intermodal Europe 2025 demonstrated that the conversation around connected containers has fundamentally changed. The question is increasingly no longer whether dry containers will become connected, but how quickly the industry can deploy the technology at scale and how effectively organisations can use the resulting data. For Naxxar Tech, this creates an exciting opportunity.

We believe the future of global trade will be built around intelligent, connected cargo where IoT provides visibility, AI transforms data into insight, and digital platforms enable stakeholders to make faster and better-informed decisions. The transition has been many years in the making, but the momentum across the industry is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

The connected container is becoming the foundation for the next generation of cargo intelligence.

At Naxxar Tech, we are excited to be part of that transformation.

Let’s push the boundaries of what is possible in the new age of cargo intelligence.
